Endings and beginnings
One of the many, many nice things about being a law professor is that there are beginnings and endings. We are a profession that is happy with ritual; we have first classes, last classes, office hours, books closing at the end of an hour together. During the term, we’re all famously busy. There is cramming going on at all levels. There is too much material for the hour, but there is always a next class to begin with the tying up of loose ends.
Now there are no more next classes, at least for a while. Whatever loose ends remain will have to stay loose. This particular term has ended, and I’m about to leave Ann Arbor.

Thanks to everyone who welcomed me and made my stay here rich and interesting. The Michigan law students are beyond-words terrific and the faculty is thoroughly engaged and truly collegial. It’s a great place, this law school.
See you on the other side of a lot of packing tape and scissors.
